Skilled labor refers to workers who have received specialized training and education in a particular trade. This training can be done in many ways, such as in a trade school or an on-the-job training program. These skilled workers can have widely varying levels of training and education. Regardless of educational focus, a skilled worker has received extensive training for a particular skill. In many cases, skilled workers have obtained a license or certification in their field. Some examples of skilled workers are: industrial electricians, commercial plumbers, and heavy equipment operators.

Work that does not require specialization are those workers who have not had specialized training in any particular skill or trade. The number of people attending trade schools across the country influences the growing supply of skilled labor. However, education is not the only factor affecting the ratio between skilled and unskilled workers. The level of immigration also plays an important factor. In general, immigrants to the United States have been either highly skilled or low skilled, adding another dimension to the skilled labor supply versus demand equation.
