World Maps – Benefits of displaying a world map – Part 2

A wall map of the world can have a variety of benefits, from cultural and social to geographic and educational. This article presents an overview of the cultural and social impacts that maps have on people.

Child’s play

Children love to use their imaginations and play games where they pretend to be someone or something. Children can use world maps to pretend they live in another country and imagine what life would be like on a different continent, with a different climate and different neighboring countries. Help children appreciate and understand that life can be very different in other countries than what they are familiar with. The countries near the equator will be warmer and it will be necessary to adapt the living conditions. By looking at a world map, adults can also let their imagination run wild. Whether planning a trip or vacation or simply looking at the distance between countries, a wall world map is key to sparking the imagination.

A scene from relativity

Wall maps of the world can provide an interesting perspective on the world in which we live. Not all world maps are in the standard format we’re used to, with the Northern Hemisphere at the top of the map, the Americas on the left (west), and China and Indonesia on the right (east). There are some interesting world maps that have a different format. The wall map centered on the Pacific Europe and the Americas on separate sides of the map. There are also upside down world maps where the southern hemisphere is now in the north of the map, and countries like Australia, Brazil, and South Africa are now in the northern part of the map.

By looking on a world map at the area you live in, you can clearly see what countries and geographic features are around you, giving you a scene of relativity.

social talking point

People find maps comforting as it gives them a base and something familiar to look at. World maps instantly attract people to look at them. They find out where they live, where they have traveled, and where they currently are. Even if they have seen a world map countless times before, there is sure to be something that people will see every time they look at a map. People comment on the different styles or layouts of the maps, the colors used, or the size and finish of a map.

If you’re putting people in a room where they might meet each other, a map can act as a catalyst to start a conversation.
